Description
The main gate of Zojoji Temple is one of the largest temple gates in eastern Japan. It was originally built in 1611, and then rebuilt in 1622. Zojoji Temple is a Buddhist temple, but it also serves as a place of mourning for the ancestors of the Tokugawa family. The Tokugawa family ruled Japan during the Edo Period, which lasted from 1603 to 1867. This period gave Japan the most stable reign it had seen up to that point in its history, and various cultural arts took shape and developed throughout the country. It is said that the population of Edo (modern-day Tokyo) exceeded one million people in the 1700's (by comparison, the population of Paris in the 1800's was about 540,000, and the population of London was about 860,000). The view from the top of this gate looks out over the ocean, and is said to have been quite an impressive vista. The san (three) in "Sangedatsu" represents the "three poisons" of greed, anger, and ignorance, according to Buddhist thought, and gedatsu means "liberation" from the three poisons. This gate is the only structure of Zojoji Temple that still survives from the early Edo Period. Passing through this gate can give visitors the same feeling that worshippers in old Edo had all those years ago.
